The independent school - which is one of the oldest in the country- out-performed every other school across the city, ranked best for GCSE results graded 9-7 with 520 9s, A*s and As awarded to GCSE and international GCSE students in the latest round of exam results.

Pupils from the national award winning school are also celebrating the news that the results placed them in the top 25 national independent school league tables for similar results.

Over half of GCSE students walked away with nothing but straight A*s and As.

The Department of Education does not include iGCSEs in its league tables, which had led to criticism from the Grammar School who say it could give parents the wrong impression of how the school is performing.

Leaders say by not including iGCSE results in their league tables, the numbers are skewed and don’t reflect the results of any school teaching iGCSEs for key subjects including English and Mathematics.

Headteacher Kathy Crewe-Read said “To achieve the top grade of 9, 8 and A* takes a combination of excellent teaching, hard work and determination. The cohort of students who gained these results, now in Lower Sixth, actually achieved some of the best GCSEs in the country. We are really proud of their hard work, and achievements, and of the excellent staff, who supported and inspired them as they studied."
