The Express & Star has decided not to share the distressing photo of the rabbit

A member of the public came across the cage with the dead white rabbit at around 9.30am on July 19, at the side of Chepstow Road.

RSPCA Inspector Kate Levesley was sent to investigate and said she believes the rabbit had died from neglect.

She said: "The rabbit’s body was decomposing in an outdoor cage so it is pretty clear it had been someone’s pet and most of its white fur had come off.

"Sadly I believe it was neglected and so the owner decided to throw the rabbit away like a piece of rubbish.

“They didn’t even have the decency to dispose of it in a dignified way – it is such a callous thing to do.

"It is appalling how someone would just think to dump their pet like rubbish at the side of a road.

“We do understand that people’s circumstances can change which means they can no longer care for their pets but there are options available to owners if this is the case

“I am appealing for anyone who knows who owned the rabbit or maybe recognises the cage to contact me.

"I am also keen to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area where the rabbit was found dumped.”

Anyone with any information should contact the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
