Community unite at vigil to mourn Stafford house fire victims

Dozens of people gathered to pay tribute to four children who died in a Stafford house fire.

Riley Holt, aged eight, Keegan Unitt, aged six, Tilly Rose Unitt, aged four, and Olly Unit, aged three, died in a blaze on Sycamore Lane in the Highfields estate of Stafford in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Tonight residents walked from The Oxleathers Pub on Sundown Drive, to the police cordon at the bottom of Whittingham Drive, near the scene of the fire on Sycamore Lane.

Candles were laid at the scene as well as flowers and teddies.

Debbie Howe, landlady at The Oxleathers pub in Stafford, had the idea for a small vigil but said she was ‘emotional and shocked’ at how many people came along.

Chief Fire Officer Becci Bryant also attended earlier this week to pay her respects and lay flowers.

Police Chief Inspector Gemma Ward said: “There has been a huge outpouring of support.People have expressed their shock and grief, but taken the time to ask about the welfare of the family and those dealing with the incident, which is much appreciated.”
