The chain is keen to create a bigger store in Great Bridge, potentially resulting in more jobs.

Under new plans, its store on Horseley Heath would be bulldozed along with a van sales company to make room for the new superstore.

The rebuilt Lidl supermarket would occupy a space almost double the size, with bosses saying they need a larger store to meet growing demand.

The budget retailer has enjoyed a boom in recent years with many shoppers choosing it and rival Aldi over the traditional 'big four' supermarkets.

Plans to create the larger store, along with a 120-space car park, have been lodged with Sandwell Council with a decision expected in the next few months.

Lidl suggested the improvement works in Great Bridge could be part of a wider scheme to upgrade shops across the country.

A design statement from the supermarket, submitted with the plans, said: "Lidl has sought to improve its store operating practices over the years to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of its customers, while keeping cost to a minimum, thereby delivering exceptional value across its product range.

"To this end, the store format has evolved and Lidl has found that many of its stores, including this one, are now unable to be stocked and serviced as efficiently as they might be.

"Some of the company’s existing stores need to be brought up to date to ensure that customers continue to benefit from the quality and positive shopping experience that Lidl offers."

The revamp would continue Lidl's investment in the area, which has seen it open a huge distribution centre next to the M6 in Wednesbury.

Great Bridge councillor Pete Allen said he believed the expansion would be a boost for the area.

He said: "I think it will be brilliant. The car park there is always pretty well full and more competition is always welcome.

"Another good thing about Lidl is you can use the car park for three hours so it could benefit other shops as well."
