Dennis Amos has sometimes spent 16 hours a day in his Oldbury garden while shielding.

The 75-year-old was told to shield by his doctor and has not been able to have his four grandchildren helping him in the garden this year.

His garden features begonias, marigold, 350 geraniums, fuchsia, mirabilis, tree lilies, sunflowers and poppies.

Mr Amos said: "I work hard every year but this year I've been extra busy as I've not had to go anywhere for 13 weeks.

"I've been really enjoying it as I've not been able to go out.

"I'm quite old fashioned, I use begonia tubers.

"When the season is finished you have to drive them out, about 250 bulbs, then wrap them in brown paper, put them in a bag in a box and keep them dry until February or March, then you open them up and expose them to the sun.

"Then they start to sprout ready for a new season.

"It does take a long time. Most people use the plants from nurseries.

"I sit in the garden with my wife Jean and relax and look at the beauty of it.

"I've missed the grandchildren this year as they normally help but they haven't with the lockdown.

"I'm really pleased but it has been hard work. I've been in the garden seven days a week. Sometimes from 5am until about 9pm.

"I think if you really enjoy something it doesn't turn out to be a long day."
