The man, in his 70s, was found in the passage near the Bell Inn in Delph Road just before 7am this morning.

A detective from West Midlands Police said there was no criminal involvement and the man fell over.

Two pupils from Thorns Community Centre found the man and provided first aid.

Detective Inspector Colin Mattinson, from the West Midlands Police's CID, said: "We cordoned off an area while we made enquiries into how the man came about his injuries.

"After speaking to a number of witnesses and trawling CCTV we are satisfied that that the man has taken ill and sustained his injuries from a fall and that there is no criminal involvement.

"He remains in hospital and will be spoken to in due course. We would like to thank the local community for helping us with our enquiries especially the two pupils from Thorns Community Centre in Brierley Hill who initially raised the alarm and provided first aid, they did a fantastic job."
