The ground floor of the Marriott Hotel, Hagley Road, was evacuated while the area was ventilated.

Nine firefighters were called at 3.54pm yesterday – arriving within four minutes.

The incident involved preparation of a chemical for the swimming pool which released a small amount of gas.

West Midlands Fire Service urged people to avoid the area.

"We sent two fire engines – a total of nine firefighters. The first was there in under four minutes.

"There was a partial evacuation of the premises and that partial evacuation involved the ground floor and basement."
