Criminals are charging victims nearly £400 for puppies and kittens which are being falsely advertised over the internet.

The crooks are targetting people who are seeking companionship amid the coronavirus lockdown, which is leaving people feeling isolated.

Crooks are sending people photographs of the animals and telling customers they can't visit them in person, due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

People are then being asked to transfer over sums of money, ranging from £100 up to nearly £400, to then never to receiv the pets.

The scams have taken place over the past two weeks, with West Midlands Police urging more people not to fall victim.

Kloe Burrows, from the force's Economic Crime Unit, said: "These con-artists are preying on insecurities during the Covid-19 outbreak.

"People may be feeling lonely due to the lockdown and seeking some companionship; some may want the fresh focus of caring for a new pet.

"These scammers want to take advantage of this and it’s important to take precautions to make sure you’re dealing with a reputable seller and not become a fraud victim."
