Vehicle stolen in car-jacking crashes into bus in Birmingham

A vehicle stolen in an armed car-jacking crashed into a bus in Birmingham while fleeing from police.

The Vauxhall Astra was stolen in an armed car-jacking in Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green, in which the victim was hit with a hammer and then police spotted it being driven on Snow Hill at 5.35pm yesterday.

Officers indicated for it to pull over but the driver failed to stop and shortly afterwards crashed into a bus in Wimbourne Road.

The driver, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of robbery, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. He remains in police custody.

And a passenger was cut from the car by fire crew and taken to hospital for treatment to a back injury.

No-one on the bus was hurt.

West Midlands Police said: "A car-jacking suspect has been arrested after a stolen car failed to stop for police in Birmingham yesterday before crashing into a bus.

"Patrol cops spotted a stolen Vauxhall Astra on Snow Hill at 5.35pm and monitored it as the occupants travelled into Summer Hill Road.

"They were indicated to pull over but failed to stop.

"However, moments later the car collided with a bus in Wimbourne Road. The driver, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of robbery, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. He remains in police custody.

"A 37-year-old passenger was cut from the car by fire crew and taken to hospital for treatment to a back injury. No-one on the bus was hurt.

"It is understood the Vauxhall Astra was stolen during an armed car-jacking in Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green, on December 9 in which the victim was hit with a hammer.

"A great spot by the officers involved - and a significant arrest."
