The Luger pistol and its magazine, containing six rounds, was found in woodland at Moseley Bog by Birmingham's Organised Crime Team.

The gun was found with a box containing more than 30 bullets after a search of the area by the team on Thursday(10), prompted by information from the community.

The gun was made safe by firearms officers at the site off Yardley Wood Road and will now be forensically examined – and check for links to any shootings.

Inspector Simon Graham, from the Birmingham Organised Crime Team, said: "We have got another deadly weapon off the streets and it is all thanks to intelligence from the community.

“Since the team launched, we have been really proactive in gathering intelligence, making arrests and taking guns off the streets.

“But we can’t do it without the help of the public. If you have got any information about people with access to guns, we would urge you to do the right thing and let us know so that we can take them off the streets and prevent people getting seriously injured and killed.”

The Birmingham Organised Crime Unit was doubled in strength in June, with twenty officers drafted into the specialist taskforce in a move that will enhance its capability to better understand the make-up of gangs, disrupt their activity and strike swiftly to make arrests.

Shotguns, a revolver and even an AK-47 have been recovered by the team since then.

Anyone with information for the team can get in touch by calling 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
