Four men wearing head coverings made threats to the staff in the Sutton Road store at lunchtime on Thursday.

They then placed a blue strap around the ATM machine and using a vehicle tried three times to remove it unsuccessfully.

The would-be robbers abandoned the vehicle in Parkhall Road and made off in a grey BMW.

Police said staff were "shook up" but unhurt.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A very nasty incident took place at the above store.

"Four male offenders arrived at the Co-op in a vehicle all wearing head coverings.

"Once inside the store they have then made threats to staff brandishing a hammer.

"They have then placed a blue strap around the ATM machine and using the vehicle they turned up in have tried on three occasions to remove the ATM machine all unsuccessful.

"The vehicle that was used in this incident was found and recovered in Parkhall Road. The offenders escaped in another vehicle (a grey BMW).

"CCTV and further investigations are ongoing.

"The shocking thing about this incident is that it took place in broad daylight on August 1 2019 between 11.40am and 11.45am

"I have attended the store today and all staff are fine, a bit shook up which is to be expected but they are ok."

Co-op has been contacted for comment.
