The man, 33, is thought to have been stabbed on the Isabel Trail path at around 11.30pm last night.

He is believed to have walked to The Haybarn, a residential cul-de-sac near with a walkway to the trail close to the Tollgate Industrial Estate, and was found about 10 minutes later.

The circumstances of the attack are not yet known and so far nobody has been arrested.

A woman, who did not wished to be named, spoke of her shock at the moment the injured man arrived at her doorstep.

She said: "He was banging on my window but I wouldn't let him in, I didn't know who he was.

"He then banged on next door and they range the police and ambulance.

"I didn't see him but I heard him saying 'let me in'."

Her neighbour, another woman who didn't want to be named, said: "My husband, he rang the police. The man was banging on the front door and he said he had been stabbed three times.

"My husband didn't answer the door, as you don't know if it could have been a scam.

"You don't expect this kind of thing to happen around here, it is a nice area.

"I just hope whoever did this gets caught."

A 500-metre section of the Isabel Trail remained cordoned off between Aston Terrace and Tenby Drive until mid-afternoon on Wednesday as police forensic teams examined the area.

No detailed descriptions of possible offenders have been identified, Staffordshire Police confirmed.

The force was also unable to confirm how many suspects officers were searching for and if the victim was known to the culprit.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman added: "He was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries and his condition is currently described as stable.
