Police have launched an appeal to trace the driver of the car involved in the crash.

The victim, a 62-year-old woman, died after the crash at around 11.10am today.

It happened in Rookery Road, Handsworth, near its junction with Soho Road.

The woman, who lived locally, was pronounced dead at the scene, say West Midlands Police.

Surrounding roads were closed by police, and officers are scouring CCTV from the area.

The family of the woman who died has been informed.

They are being supported by specialist officers.

Sgt Alan Wood, from the force's collision investigation unit, said urgent efforts were being made to trace the car involved.

He said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the lady who has died.

“We urgently need to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened.

“I’d urge to the driver to do the right thing and make himself to known police as soon possible.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, ambulance staff found a woman on the pavement who had suffered very serious injuries and was in cardiac arrest.

"There was no car at the scene.

“Ambulance staff and the doctor carried out advanced life support, but sadly, despite all efforts, it wasn’t possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.”

Police have asked anyone with information to call 101, quoting incident 817 of 9 November.
