The final moments of Herman 'Louis' Simpson's life were described by a witness to a jury at Nottingham Crown Court.

Dylan Jackson, of Crosby Close, Whitmore Reans, is accused of stabbing Mr Simpson to death in his flat in Compton Road after a heroin deal went wrong.

It is said that 20-year-old Jackson tried to dupe Mr Simpson, 47, into paying £3,000 for what he thought was cut-price heroin but was actually a package of ash.

Witness David Wynter was in the flat on April 13.

He said: "I was sitting on the settee when Dylan arrived. It was clearly a pre-arranged meeting because I saw him being given money by Louis and I saw Dylan produce what looked like a sausage-shaped package.

"Louis raised an eyebrow, being a very experienced man with drugs, when he realised he was being ripped off. I heard him say 'this doesn't seem correct' and then Dylan said 'I have come here to rob you'. As soon as he said that, Louis got half up out of his seat and Dylan launched at him with a knife. I did not see where that came from.

"I kept looking around for something to hit him with. The coffee table was moved by somebody kicking out during the struggle."

The court heard that when the table moved, it revealed a sawn-off rifle – part of an assortment of weapons kept by drug dealer Mr Simpson – which Jackson picked up and took with him as he fled.

Mr Simpson died at the scene after being stabbed six times – once through the heart.

Jackson claims he stabbed Mr Simpson in self defence after the drug dealer pointed the gun at him.

Jackson denies murder. The trial continues.
