A 28-year-old man was arrested in the raid in Queensway last night after officers discovered the bodies of a 25-year-old woman and her seven-month-old son at a house in the Billesley area of Birmingham.

The woman and her son have been named as Yvonne Walsh and Harry.

Residents living in the Queensway area described how a man came out of a block of flats on the road with his arms in the air as police pointed their weapons towards him just at around 5.15pm.

Another four, two women and two men, were also led out of the Henderson Court flats by officers but were not arrested in connection with the case.

The man, who has been arrested on suspicion of both murders, has not been named by police but they say he is known to the victims and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killings.

He was today being held in a secure facility following an assessment by mental health professionals and is currently deemed unfit to be interviewed by officers at this stage. The woman and her son were discovered at a house in Chells Grove, Billesley, at 10.30am.

A friend of the woman, who did not want to be named, said: "It's really shocking. They think she's been dead since Friday."

Yvonne is believed to have an older daughter who was not in the terraced house at the time of the attack. A post-mortem will take place shortly to establish exactly how the victims died.

The Oldbury flats remained sealed off by police today as investigations continued. A police car and officer manned the scene this morning while police tape was in place at the entrance to the car park.

The property on Chells Grove was also cordoned off by officers while forensic investigators examined the scene.

Superintendent Jo Chilton, from Force CID, said: "This is a terrible crime and my thoughts are with the family of the victims who have been left devastated by these events.

"We have a man in custody and are not looking for anyone else, but I am keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone who may have seen anything which could assist our investigation."

Police were alerted to the murders after concerns were raised about the safety of the pair.
