The father-of-two was targeted by a gang as he made his way to the train station after Watford's game against Wolves at Molineux. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A fund set up by teenage Wolves fan Ollie Floyd in the aftermath has now passed the £32,000 mark – and Sir Elton has pledged to add to it.

Honorary Watford president Sir Elton said he and his husband David Furnish would be making a financial contribution to the Nic Cruwys Future Football Fund.

"I am so shocked and saddened to hear about what happened to Nic," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are very much with him and his family at this time. We wish him a very speedy recovery."

Meanwhile, Wolves have announced they will include an appeal for information on the attack in the matchday programme for Tuesday's home game against Sheffield Wednesday.

A club statement read: "Plans are in place to include an appeal for information on the assault on Watford supporter Nic Cruwys in Tuesday's matchday programme.

"Leaflets will be distributed to supporters including a message from West Midlands Police thanking people for their support and appealing for more info.

"The club's thoughts remain with Nic and his family and we will continue to work closely with the police in their investigation.

The Express & Star has offered a £1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction, which was increased to £1,250 after a Wolves season ticket holder gave an anonymous donation.

Three teenagers, two aged 18 and a 13-year-old, have been arrested over the attack. All have been bailed.

Mr Cruwys, 44, a self-employed milkman from Hemel Hempstead, was with a group of friends when he was assaulted in Little's Lane. Police said it was a completely unprovoked attack'.
