The landmark marble lions on a Great Bridge roundabout are getting a makeover to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The lions which were erected in honour of the Golden Jubilee in 2002 are going to be spruced up, and the lighting on the island is going to be rewired.

The work has been organised by the Great Bridge Traders Association who secured funding from the Birmingham Foundation For All for the project.

The revamp at the island at the junction of Great Bridge Street, New Road, Great Western Way and Horseley Heath will cost around £2,000. The landmark was unveiled by historian Professor Carl Chinn in 2002.

Tony Roper, of the Great Bridge Traders Association, said: "We wanted to do them up in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. It should only take the workers a day to complete, but they should look wonderful when they are done. We are very proud of the lions."
