Harrowing images from the frontline in Iraq and Afghanistan have gone on display at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Sergeant Major Douglas Farthing MBE, who is serving in Afghanistan at the moment, put brush to canvas to capture moments in time from the two conflicts.

His brushwork is made all the more remarkable as they were completed while on duty in the war-torn countries, often in sweltering heat while in a trench, on a rooftop or hillside.

His collection, '2Years2Wars', can be viewed at the arboretum until February 29.

Sgt Maj Farthing says the paintings convey the landscape, people, soldiers and their equipment of warfare while expressing the emotions and reality of life.

"War art is important," he said. "I document the real life events of serving soldiers. Our profession is different to any other and the position you can find yourself in, at a moment's notice, is so different to anything at home."

'2Years2Wars' is on display in the Long Gallery at the arboretum's Visitor Centre. The exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Entry to the National Memorial Arboretum is free.
