Cody goes the extra mile

A pet dog fled a house that was being burgled before going on a mile-long Lassie-style mission to raise the alarm.

Cody the Jack Russell crossed the busy Birmingham Road in Coseley and made his way through a series of winding streets to the home of his owners' relatives, where he began barking for help - but it was too late to prevent the house being ransacked

Today Carli and Andy Jones, both aged 29, spoke of their devastation at the loss of a wedding ring, an engagement ring, a 50-inch TV, scores of Christmas goodies and a "priceless" camera containing the only pictures of son Tyler, who was born prematurely just five weeks ago.

Cody had left their house in Bronwen Road when the raid happened on Thursday afternoon and ended up at the home of Mr Jones' parents, Malcolm and Jackie, in Grange Road.

They then phoned Carli assuming she had lost Cody while out giving him a walk, only to find she was shopping at Merry Hill and had left him locked in the house.

By the time she had got back home it was 4pm, where she found the front door kicked in and their prized possessions gone.

Carli, who works for the RAC but is on maternity leave, said: "We lost our most precious things, including a Kodak camera containing all the pictures of our only son.

"Tyler was actually meant to be born on Thursday but I had him prematurely five weeks ago. If these people have any heart I'd plead with them to give the camera back.

"We have also lost all the Christmas presents for everyone."

Included in the haul was a diamond wedding ring worth at least £1,600.
