The Al Amin Islamic Centre in Heath Town will be the home for Ramadan Radio Wolverhampton, the city's first Muslim radio station.

The station has been set up for the 30 days of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

It will broadcast a host of programmes catering for an Islamic audience, with advice, reminders about prayer times and discussions on topics such as law, finance, health, politics and current affairs.

The station was set up by Wolverhampton businessman Khalid Parvez, who spoke about his excitement at being able to launch a new community radio station for the city.

He said: "Our aim is to make Ramadan Radio self-sustainable and provide opportunities for members of our community to take part in making local radio.

"We also want to encourage and promote a voice for those who are under-represented or socially excluded to provide an outlet for creativity, shared vision and expression for everyone in our local communities."

The station, which launches online on Sunday, April 19, and on 87.9FM on Friday, April 24, will feature a mixture of presenters, from professional DJs to religious leaders and members of the community.

Thrilled

Alvina Ali, better known as DJ Aashiqui on Radio XL 1296AM, is from Wolverhampton and will be presenting two shows during the station's broadcast.

She said she was thrilled to be joining the team and couldn't want to get started.

She said: "I look forward to connecting with the listeners and giving something back to the community to make a difference. I hope it will reach more listeners worldwide."

Alvina will host two shows, In Conversation with... (Thursday 7pm-8pm) and Loose Sisters (Sunday 1.30pm-3pm).

She said: "I’m honoured to be hosting the two slots whilst having the opportunity to add my own flavour to it and listeners can expect to be entertained and amused.

"I want them to be so engaged that they feel they have to join in with what’s going on – be that on the phone or in other ways."
