Sawyers: Walsall can stun Chelsea

Last updated

Winger Romaine Sawyers insists Walsall are motivated and inspired to pull off a cup shock against Chelsea this week.

The Saddlers will take on Jose Mourinho's all-stars in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

And, following their flying start to the League One season, Sawyers reckons his side has what it takes to secure the biggest of giant killings.

The 23-year-old said: "All the players are inspired by the occasion and we are determined to make our mark. We can show our excitement now.

"We have had a lot of league games since the draw but we are really looking forward to it. This is a big opportunity for us. They are the English champions but we have great belief.

"It's the chance to make history and we believe we can match them."

Walsall continued their fine start to the new season with a 1-1 draw at Peterborough on Saturday.

But Dean Smith's side were unlucky not to take all three points with Jermaine Anderson's 84th-minute dismissal and Michael Bostwick's 87th-minute penalty turning the fixture on its head.

Sawyers, though, was keen to draw in the positives from the game, adding: "In the first half we didn't start too well but, in the second-half, we really grew into the game.

"We took the lead and the sending off should have worked in our favour. But they responded well, they sprung into a different gear and won the penalty.

"But we have to be positive because we are a side that looks like scoring goals. It's also another point achieved away from home.

"We are still second in the league and we have put ourselves in a great position to kick on."

The Saint Kitts & Nevis international took his goal tally to five with an unstoppable 25-yard thunderbolt at London Road.

That figure matches the total he achieved in entire 2014/15 campaign and Sawyers thanked Smith for having the faith to move him into a more advanced role.
