Wednesfield's Dean Gill aims to deliver FA Cup place as parting gift

Departing Wednesfield boss Dean Gill is determined to secure a top six finish and leave the club in a clean bill of health.

Five points from the Cottagers’ final four matches would do the job – providing them with an FA Cup place next term.

They go to struggling Pegasus Juniors tomorrow, aiming to take a massive step towards their goal.

“If you don’t get promoted, FA Cup qualification is what you want, that’s the other thing to go and achieve,” said Gill, who is jumping ship to Wolverhampton Casuals in the summer due to a difference in ambition between him and the Amos Lane hierarchy.

“The FA Cup is the best goal for us. It’d be the perfect position to leave the club – promotion wouldn’t be perfect – after coming from the bottom of Division One.

“For Wednesfield to be able to have FA Cup football, it would be fantastic.

“Just because I’m leaving, it doesn’t mean I don’t want the club to carry on being successful.

“I want them to get a good manager, a good committee in, and if they finish in the top six again next season, I’d be the happiest man in Wednesfield. I don’t want to see them go downhill.”

Wednesfield go into tomorrow’s clash on the back of a 3-1 loss to table-toppers Wolverhampton Sporting.

Despite the loss, Gill was very proud with how his players performed.

“They’re a good side, but we were the better side,” he said.

“They had a dubious penalty decision go their way and we had a dubious offside which we would have equalised from not go our way.

“We were sensational to be fair. Our performances recently have been great so we have got to get the points at Pegasus.

“If we play how we did on Wednesday, we’ll win the game.”

Sporting are looking to make it 14 wins in a row at Hereford Lads Club.

In the Midland League Division One, Walsall Wood want to continue the promotion party by beating Paget Rangers.
