Gary O'Neil gives verdict on Wolves award winners

And while O’Neil was quick to praise them both, he also wanted to highlight less senior players that have stepped up this season, regardless of Wolves’ recent poor form.

“It’s definitely deserved and they’ve had some fantastic performances this season,” O’Neil said of the award-winning pair.

“Nelson and Mario are two of the more senior ones and we’ve had some fantastic players that have come out of their shell this year.

“Bouba Traore wouldn’t have had much of an impact on the season last year with the midfielders that were ahead of him.

“Joao Gomes is a young player that’s gone from not playing too much to being selected in the Brazil squad and playing basically every game and every minute for us.

“Toti Gomes had centre midfielders starting at centre-back ahead of him last season and he’s played pretty much every minute for us. There’s lots of players that have managed to move forward this season but it is difficult to keep punching above your weight.

“Sometimes your flaws and weaknesses end up catching up with you and it feels a little bit like that.

“It’s up to me to make sure we regroup. We got to Anfield at the weekend and try to put another memorable result on the board and then it’s a big summer ahead.”

Despite the current bad form, O’Neil was also keen to bring attention to Wolves’ success this campaign, as he looks to learn ahead of next season.

“We did a video to show the players some of the fantastic things they’ve achieved this season,” he added.

“You go back to Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, Tottenham here in the last few minutes and Manchester City.

“There’s so many fantastic things that we’ve been able to achieve, but we need to find a way to make sure we keep moving forwards.

“We’re fortunate we’re on 46 points early as there’s a lot to be learned from the last few weeks. Loads.

“You don’t want to learn it in this way, but we’re here, this is what we are and we need to take everything out of these last few weeks to make sure when we come back in August we’re better prepared.”
