Nuno Espirito Santo's side would be in the top six if it was not for the technology while Dean Smith's charges would be four places higher up the table.

Wolves – who go up against Villa at Molineux on Sunday – have missed out on four points, according to the study by bettingexpert.

Villa, meanwhile, would be two points better off had VAR not been introduced at the start of this term – with Manchester City and West Ham also cost two points.

Southampton, Crystal Palace and Leicester have gained an extra three points thanks to VAR.

Leaders Liverpool have been unaffected by the technology. Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley, Norwich and Watford fall into that bracket too.

The study takes into account all uses of VAR where the referee’s initial decision has been overturned.
