John Ruddy

Denied Boye with a sharp save at his near post early on. He did well to deny Puscas in stoppage-time as well before Boye nodded in from close range to take it to penalties. 7

Jesus Vallejo

Turned inside-out by Boye before the Royals striker tested Ruddy in the opening few minutes. Too often reacting to things instead of reading the game. Shaky again. 5

Ryan Bennett

Playing in the sweeper role in the absence of Coady, Bennett made a goal-line clearance before Reading eventually equalised and played well. 7

Max Kilman

Meite tried to use his pace and power to get past Kilman down the left flank in the first half, but the youngster stood strong – holding off the striker and passing to a team-mate. That epitomised his performance, doing the basics well. 7

Matt Doherty

Will be happy to have got a full 90 under his belt en route to full fitness. Faded in and out of the game, though. 6

Bruno Jordao

Got on the scoresheet on his debut and looked lively in midfield, closing down with intent and being efficient with his passing. His gold and black bow was sadly brought to an end in the 42nd minute, but he could not have done much more in that time. 8

Ruben Neves

Donned the armband, and it was fair to expect him to run the show against the Royals given the quality we all know he possesses. Did not stand out, though. 6

Morgan Gibbs-White

Started brightly, finding pockets of space between Reading's midfield and defence, but gave the ball away too often in the second half. Cut a frustrated figure as he was substituted. 6

Ruben Vinagre

Displayed attacking intent, as ever, but found Royals wing-back Howe tough to get the better of. Had his moments. 6

Patrick Cutrone

Not quite coming off for the Italian at the moment, with a decent strike in the first half saved by Virginia. Had no other chances but ran himself into the ground. 7

Pedro Neto

Like Cutrone, put himself about and forced Reading to foul him a few times. Was booked for diving, though. 6

Subs

Taylor Perry (for Jordao, 42)

The 18-year-old was calm and composed in possession. Carried on his good work from China over the summer. 7

Meritan Shabani (for Gibbs-White, 73)

Went down in agony just minutes after coming on. N/A

Luke Cundle (for Neto, 83)

Great experience for the 17-year-old. A night he will never forget. 6

Not used: Patricio (gk), Coady, Sanderson, Moutinho
