Benik Afobe deserved a shot at the Premier League - Don Goodman

Former Wolves striker Don Goodman believes Benik Afobe deserved a chance to shine for Wolves’ in the Premier League next season – amid talks over a shock move to Stoke.

Afobe was only signed from Bournemouth two weeks ago but has been heavily linked with a £12million move up the M6 to recently-relegated Stoke – just days after completing a £10m move to Molineux from Bournemouth.

The striker scored six times following his loan move back to Molineux in January and Goodman believes he had done enough to earn a chance to impress with Wolves next season, writes Ben Husband.

The 52-year-old said: “Wolves can maybe say they can make some more money but he finished the season very well and looks like he’s found a home again, because he was first class last time around.”

With Wolves rumoured to be in the market for more strikers, Goodman did question how keen Afobe would be to have a bit part role for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.

“I definitely think he deserves a chance,” Goodman said. “But at the same time Benik wouldn’t want to come to Wolves and play the same role he played at Bournemouth; which was coming off the bench occasionally and being a fringe player.”

Afobe first signed for Wolves in the 2015/16 season before leaving for Bournemouth.

Goodman feels that during his spells both at Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth and now at Wolves he hasn’t been given the chance to truly prove his doubters wrong.

He said: “One thing we know about him, is that he is extremely hungry to prove that he’s a top level striker and he hasn’t had that opportunity yet.”

Although he believes Wolves do need a striker, he thinks Afobe has earned the chance to be that man himself. “What is good is they are identifying an area that they definitely need recruitment in and that’s a striker that can bang in goals in the Premier League,” said Goodman.

“They need a goalscorer, definitely, and you can’t really argue with anything that Benik has done in his two tenures at the club.”
