Wolves captain questions controversial decision

An Erling Haaland four-goal masterclass got under way after 12 minutes when Rayan Ait-Nouri collided with Josko Gvardiol and referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot.

Head coach Gary O’Neil branded it a ‘terrible’ decision and Kilman was also left less than impressed.

“That’s the only one I really look back on and it was quite questionable,” he said. “It was early in the game and both players came into each other. Rayan didn’t know where the other player was, but stuff like that is stuff to overcome. We had to be better.

“It was a tough game. We started the game really poorly and some decisions are quite questionable, but when you’re 1-0 or 2-0 down against City early on, it’s really tough to overcome. We showed a lot of character in the second half, even though the result was really bad.

“There were some really bad bits in there, some good bits, but we need to be much better.

“We need to show that next week.

“They’re one of the best teams in the world but we knew what we were coming up against and we have to be a bit better.

“We have to dust ourselves down and make sure we get ready and go again.”

Wolves have been on the wrong end of several officiating decisions this season, with the squad feeling hard-done-by.

Although Matheus Cunha insisted the performance on Saturday was poor, he also felt aggrieved at the penalty decision.

“It’s the same referee that already gave some things against us at Molineux,” Cunha said.

“It’s hard to talk about this. Maybe we’ve lost 12 points with these controversial decisions.

“But we’re not coming here to put a decision on the referee because we didn’t play well also and we have to take responsibility.

“It’s hard to play City at home and then at the start of the game there’s a penalty. It’s hard to manage but we need to keep going.

“It was a tough game. In the first half we didn’t play at our best level and to come here it’s always very hard. City are an unbelievable team and with every mistake we know they will enjoy the opportunity.

“We need to be better for the other games.”

Wolves now finish the season at home to Crystal Palace and away to Liverpool with the aim of ending on a high.

“To get six points is very important,” Cunha added. “It will be hard against Liverpool, but we have an important game against Crystal Palace at home.

“We need to play and get three points, and keep focused. It’s been an unbelievable season for us with the perspective we have, but we cannot finish with a bad feeling.

“We need to feel like ‘wow, we did have a good season’ and keep going to the next one.”
