McCarthy departure was confirmed during his post match press conference following the 1-0 win over Barnsley.

"I spoke with Marcus (Evans, Ipswich owner) at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now," he told the club website.

The 59-year old also appeared to be irked by the crowd's reaction to the second-half substitution of Barry Cotter.

The former Wolves manager had recently announced he was leaving the club at the end of the season following six years at Portman Road.

McCarthy is the current 6/4 favourite to take over at West Brom following the departure of Alan Pardew.

However the Express and Star understands Albion are not actively pursuing talks with the former Republic of Ireland manager.
