A Wolves under-19 side failed to retain the Bitzer Cup trophy they won last summer after losing to Mainz and Standard Liege.

A team largely comprising under-18 players had beaten German side TuS Ergenzingen 6-0 to kick off the tournament in style.

Aaron Collins netted a hat-trick, while Daniel Armstrong scored twice and Aaron Simpson was also on target.

Armstrong netted again in the second group game in Germany but Wolves lost 3-1.

And then Mainz beat Wolves 2-0 in the final match, leaving the under-19s to contest a fifth/sixth-place play-off today.

Irish teenager Connor Ronan was in the squad, and ahead of the tournament he spoke of his desire to make his first team debut for Wolves next season.

Ronan was named academy player of the year last week, following on from the accolade of winning the Ireland Under-17 Player of the Year award.

The 18-year-old travelled with the first team on their pre-season trip to France last summer and was an unused substitute for the Capital One Cup victory over Barnet.

He said: "Personally I just want to go one better than this season.

"So where this season I have played a few games for the first team in friendlies, next season I'm hoping to get a few appearances in competitive games and try to impress the gaffer. I'd also be open to going out on loan, definitely.

"Any chance to play first-team football would be a great experience."

Of his Ireland honour, Ronan added: "Wolves gave me a couple of days off to go over for the awards ceremony and I ended up winning it, which was a massive honour and for me and my family.

"They were all proud of me. It was great to be there and meet the Ireland first-team players."
