'No need to panic' says Wolves midfielder Kevin McDonald

"There is no need to panic." That's the message from Wolves midfield Kevin McDonald as Kenny Jackett's team head into a West Midlands derby looking to end their recent slump.

Three consecutive defeats have left Wolves nine points adrift of the play-offs places.

They play sixth-placed Blues at 12.30pm tomorrow desperate for a positive result to get their promotion campaign back on track.

And Scottish midfielder McDonald called for Wolves to stick to their guns in a bid to play their way back into form.

"Every team in the league has a rough patch and hopefully we can get it over it with seven months and 33 games left of the season," the 26-year-old said.

"There is no need to panic and we have to stick together as a team.

"We know we have the players in the dressing room to do more than enough to get up the league.

"We have had three defeats in a row and that is not ideal and we are disappointed with ourselves as a team because we feel we should have got something out of those games.

"We can overcome though, and where better place to do it than away to Birmingham on Saturday."

After tomorrow's short trip to St Andrew's, Wolves travel to Bristol City on Tuesday night and then host Burnley next weekend.

An international break follows that, and McDonald knows Wolves need some points ahead of the two-week break, starting tomorrow.

"I think there have been positive signs in the games recently apart from Brentford," he added.

"We have got to go there and stick to our guns – defend well as a team and then our creative players and strikers can get chances and score goals.

"We have to concentrate on ourselves and put in a good performance.

"We have to defend well and then hope that the football can take care of itself because technically we have a talented team.

"Saturday is all about how we approach the game physically and mentally and then we can give a good account of ourselves.

"Derby games are good to play in.

"I have played in a few big ones and I know we didn't do the best against Birmingham last season.

"It is always a good atmosphere and we need to keep ourselves tight and just quell the crowd if we can."

Wolves have failed to reach the heights of their last two seasons under Jackett, in which they won promotion as League One winners and then narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs.

McDonald, though, said any added pressure from outside the club to go one better this season was not reflected in the Wolves dressing room.

"The pressure is different but for us inside the dressing room it is the same, it hasn't changed," the 26-year-old said.

"We know we have got a good squad of players who can do well in this league.

"Maybe there is added pressure from the outside but for us, it's no different.

"People might think Wolves will be there or thereabouts but I don't really look at that long-term.

"You can win two games in a row and be in and around the play-offs or lose three and you are mid table.

"It changes every week – everyone beats everyone else – and we have to take it game by game and see where it takes us at the end of the season."
