Roger Johnson on brink of Wolves exit as Sheffield Wednesday close in on loan deal

A deal has been agreed in principle between the clubs with Johnson, a first-team exile at Wolves, expected to pen a three-month loan.

Molineux head coach Kenny Jackett said this afternoon: "Roger is set to go to Sheffield Wednesday on loan for three months. I think it's all agreed, The paperwork hasn't been done but it's all agreed verbally.

"I'm pleased for Roger; it means he can move on and play some football and contribute to what is a very good club at Sheffield Wednesday.

"It was hard for him here but he is ready to play for Dave Jones' team and we wish him all the best at Sheffield."

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric confirmed the Championship club expect to sign the defender within the next 24 hours.

Mandaric said: "I'd be very surprised if it didn't happen, we're talking."

Johnson is one of Wolves' top earners – believed to be on at least £20,000-a-week – but it is not yet known what percentage of his wages, if any, Wednesday are prepared to pay.

Once the deal is complete, Johnson is set to be reunited with Hillsborough boss Jones, who was his manager for three years at Cardiff.

Johnson was told he had no future at Molineux following the appointment of Jackett in May and has been training away from the first team since the start of the summer.

The former Birmingham man was handed the captaincy by boss Mick McCarthy but he became the target of criticism from fans as he struggled to recapture his Blues form.

And his arrival coincided with the start of the slump that took the Molineux club from the Premier League to League One.

The big earner was also fined by the club in March 2012 after arriving for training worse for wear.

And his Wolves career ended on a low point in May when, after relegation to League One was confirmed following a 2-0 defeat at Brighton, he couldn't give his shirt away to angry fans at full time.
