West Brom coach Neil Cutler: Jurgen Klopp's comments were disrespectful

Albion coach Neil Cutler has labelled Jurgen Klopp’s outburst after last weekend’s game ‘extremely disrespectful’.

The Liverpool boss launched into a bizarre rant after the Baggies roared back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 thanks to two late goals from set pieces.

He complained that The Hawthorns pitch wasn’t watered at half-time, and that Albion had won a useless point because they were going down this season.

But Cutler, who joined in January as goalkeeping coach but has expanded his role under caretaker boss Darren Moore, believes Klopp’s comments were out of order.

“I thought Jurgen Klopp’s comments were extremely disrespectful to what we do,” said Cutler.

“We’re not a long ball team, we’re just not that way. We can play over the press if we need to, but we’re not a smash-it team, we like to play in between gaps and find positions to get into.

"I don’t think we’ve played long ball for a while, I find that a bit disrespectful that he’s come out with that.

“We created chances from open play but when you get a set piece you’re going to take advantage of that.

“Especially when you’ve got (Craig) Dawson, Ahmed (Hegazi) and Jonny Evans who are going to go and attack it.”

One of Cutler’s new responsibilities is looking after set pieces, and the Baggies have rediscovered their potency from dead balls under Moore.

The former Walsall coach has put particular emphasis on blocking off defenders and reacting to the second ball, and he believes it’s paying dividends.

“That’s four goals in three games so I am delighted!” he said. “We’re good at set pieces in general, we’ve got some big boys with decent movement who read the ball well.

“We’ve got players that can deliver a ball so well, (Chris) Brunty and Matt Phillips can put it exactly where you want them too.

“We offer something a little bit different, I won’t go into too much detail, but I think we offer something different to what I’ve seen in the Premier League.

“Coming from League One we can add something a little bit more streetwise. It’s stuff that goes on a lot in League One, but we can add it to the Premier League."

Last night Klopp was asked about his comments ahead of Liverpool's Champions League match with Roma and he said: "Greetings to Birmingham! I was not in the best mood that day!"
