The Rams, who are currently second in the Championship, want the winger to help their promotion push.

Albion are looking into ways to free up wages from their bill because they are nearing the limit allowed under the short-term cost control rules of Financial Fair Play.

Boss Alan Pardew admitted the club could ‘possibly’ offload other players apart from Jonny Evans before the window shuts, but the Baggies are not willing to weaken their squad without money coming in to fund new additions.

Pardew has also previously played down any chance of McClean leaving this window.

Earlier this month he said: “I don’t see me moving him on or him wanting to go. I don’t see that scenario.

“He’ll be an important player from now until the end of the season. He’s a character and I think that’s important for this team as well.”

The 28-year-old responded to the rumours himself on Twitter when Albion fan Stuart Hunt said: “I’ll drive McClean if he needs a lift.”

The Albion winger replied: “No you are grand i have range rover, a bmw i8 and a mercedes, can drive myself,” with a smiley-face emoji.

McClean has made 23 appearances so far this season but has only started eight games.

He scored his only goal of the season against West Ham earlier this month.
