West Brom not willing to sell Jonny Evans amid Arsenal interest

Albion are not willing to sell defender Jonny Evans this summer and the club have not slapped a £25million price tag on his head.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in the 28-year-old, as they desperately try and find a new centre-back for their injury-plagued defence.

But the Gunners are yet to make a formal bid for Evans and reports the Baggies were demanding £25m for his signature are believed to be speculative.

Albion do not wish to sell Evans, who was arguably player of the season last year, because he is simply too important to the squad.

The former Manchester United defender, who signed for £6m last summer, can play centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield.

The Baggies have already sold James Chester to Aston Villa in this transfer window for £6m rising to a possible £8m with add-ons.

That leaves just Jonas Olsson, 33, and Gareth McAuley, 36, as centre-back options with Craig Dawson preoccupied at right-back.

Only an outrageously huge offer for Evans that allowed the Baggies to buy a replacement defender and another player would even be considered, but with the transfer window shutting in eight days time, Albion don't want to take the risks involved in such a move.

Meanwhile, club captain Darren Fletcher has been earmarked for the captaincy of Scotland following the retirement of Scott Brown.

Fletcher was made captain of his country back in 2009 but gave up the armband in 2013 when he underwent surgery for ulcerative colitis and took a year off football.
