West Bromwich Albion have quashed rumours that their mascot Baggie Bird had been given the boot by the club.

Rumours spread on social media tonight that the popular mascot had been made redundant, but a spokesman for the club said that was not the case.

Chris Hill posted on Facebook saying: "I hear from a very good source this morning that Baggie Bird is no more up at The Hawthorns - Redundant after a good many years."

Social media sites such as Twitter were then rife with rumours that the mascot had been sacked or made redundant.

But John Simpson, media communications manager, said the rumours were false.

"Both people who are Baggie Bird and Albi will still be there for the start of next season," he said.

Dave Challoner, who plays Baggie Bird, tweeted last week that he was having an operation.

He said: "Going down for another op now. Last time I came back from theatre on Tuesday I had a get well soon message from Jimmy Bullard ledge."
