Nobody expected Williams to be pressing for a starting place at Walsall just three months into the season.

After all, the former Albion and Villa youth player had never played a single minute in the EFL prior to his summer switch to the Saddlers.

Mat Sadler had bolstered his defensive ranks with the additions of Priestley Farquharson and Chris Hussey, whilst Williams’ arrival from seventh tier outfit Alvechurch went somewhat under the radar.

An injury to Farquharson in the build-up to Walsall’s season opener at Morecambe presented Williams with his EFL bow.
