Walsall midfielder Danny Guthrie admits he found it ‘difficult to accept’ that he would have to limit his playing and training time this season.

The 33-year-old signed a new deal in the summer and announced at the time that he would need to manage his pitch time to stay fit.

After a good start to the season, the former Liverpool man admits he found that adjustment difficult at first but that it is for the good of the team.

“I know my role, I have got to stay fit,” he said.

“I have to manage myself a bit more these days in terms of when I can train and how much I can train.

“It’s difficult to accept at first because obviously you want to train every day. With three games in a week, it’s difficult for me to participate in all of them, but the manager makes that call.”

Meanwhile, when asked if he sees himself as a mentor to Liam Kinsella and Alfie Bates, Guthrie said: “Yes.

It’s important to have someone like Kins alongside me who can get about the pitch. Alfie is a really good young player. I’ll do what I can to help.”
