Darrell Clarke patient as he pursues Walsall signings

Darrell Clarke is prepared to stay patient in the transfer market as he targets ‘two or three’ more additions at Walsall.

The Saddlers began their summer business with the signing of Bristol City left-back George Nurse on a season-long loan, before last week taking Rory Holden from the Championship club on a permanent deal. Boss Clarke is keen to add more but with funds limited and the market uncertain following the coronavirus shutdown, won’t bring in players just for the sake of it.

He said: “It isn’t going to happen straight away and we’ll have to pick and choose and see what’s available in the loan market.

“I’ve got a healthy group to work with that knows each other very well and there are no quick fixes.

“We’ll be looking to try and hit the ground running and hopefully two or three additions come into the side before the end of the window.”

Walsall, who were beaten 2-0 at Crewe on Saturday in their first match for five months, continue preparations for the new League Two season with a friendly against Wolves Under-23s tonight.

Clarke’s team then head to Shrewsbury Town on Friday (12pm kick-off), before hosting Burton Albion on Saturday, August 29. They round off their pre-season schedule with a trip to to Blues on Tuesday, September 1 (both 3pm kick-offs).

All four matches will take place behind closed doors. The League Two season is scheduled to begin on September 12.
