Wes McDonald eyes Walsall play-offs spot next season

Walsall forward Wes McDonald believes expectations needed to be managed this term as the club aim for promotion next season.

Saddlers sit 14th in League Two with games currently suspended due to the coronavirus, and they are unlikely to achieve promotion or suffer relegation if the campaign resumes.

McDonald, who joined the club in the summer alongside 15 other new arrivals after relegation from League One, believes it would take time this season – but in 2020/21 they should be aiming for the play-offs.

“When I first arrived I knew Walsall was a great club, a big club,” he said on the D3D4 Football podcast.

“Especially in League Two, it’s a big club in League Two. My expectations really were to take it how it comes.

“They had just been relegated and I know what League Two is like, it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. People did think that was going to happen with all the new players we had in.

“I was ready to go and take it game by game.

“Myself and the rest of the boys really want to push on and try and get into that top seven for next season.

“We have the quality to do so and we have to do better than this season.

“I know this season hasn’t finished yet, but I definitely believe we can get top seven next season.

“The last five to 10 games we’ve shown it, with the momentum we had.

“I believe the play-offs is a target for next season, everyone is in the same boat on that one.”
