Walsall winger Wes McDonald is 'sure' that players who have contracts lasting until the end of the season will be willing to extend them to ensure they finish the campaign on its return.

Fixtures are currently suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, with no return date set – although reports have suggested the EFL are considering a return on June 6 behind closed doors.

McDonald signed an 18-month contract in January, so does not fall into the category of players that will become free agents in the summer, although he believes those that have deals coming to an end will look to extend them to help Walsall finish the season.

"I'm not too sure what it will be like for the players that were meant to be out of contract at the end of the season," he told the D3D4 Football podcast.

"But I'm sure that everyone will want to finish the season if you are in contract until the end of the season.

"It's a bit unfortunate but that's just where we are with it."

The Saddlers were in good form before the season was suspended, having gone five games unbeaten.

The play-offs are still likely out of reach, but McDonald believes the suspension came at the wrong time for the team.

"For me personally it was quite a slow start (to the season) but once I got my opportunity I just took it," he added.

"We had so many new players in and it takes time to gel and get used to the starting XI and how players play.

"All the boys were on quite a decent run so right now it's unfortunate what's happened because it's the crunch time towards the end of the season."
