Salford 1-2 Walsall - Player ratings

Liam Keen rates the Walsall players after a 2-1 win away at Salford.

Published

LIAM ROBERTS

After making an error against Carlisle, Roberts has bounced back with two wins, making a huge impact on this game. He made several saves, but his last-minute stop was sensational and won Walsall the game. 9

CAMERON NORMAN

Despite being out of favour in recent weeks, Norman has responded brilliantly. He was defensively solid against tough opponents and after Cockerill-Mollett’s injury he did a superb job playing out of position at left-back. 8

JAMES CLARKE

Clarke’s return to the side was expected following his suspension and he did well. At times he was being doubled up on by the threatening attackers, but in general he defended resolutely. 7

DAN SCARR

At times, Scarr has been below par this season, but on the whole he has been superb. This game was one of his best – he was an absolute rock in defence. He won everything in the air and was excellent at set pieces. 9

CALLUM COCKERILL-MOLLETT

A tough day for the young defender. Cockerill-Mollett has been given his chance again with Cameron Pring’s injury, but the 20-year-old suffered his own knock after 17 minutes. 6

RORY HOLDEN

Holden’s performances have been better since he got his place back in the side. In this game he played a centre attacking midfield role and he did well. It took time for him to get up to speed, but he grew into the game. 7

ALFIE BATES

The young midfielder has recovered from a poor showing a few weeks ago with two far improved performances. He’s still learning and he needs time, but he has shown grit and determination in a Saddlers shirt. 8

LIAM KINSELLA

Kinsella is a real terrier in a Walsall shirt. He consistently made blocks and put his body on the line. His defence in front of the midfield was needed. Going forward, he even caused Salford some problems. 8

WES MCDONALD

Simply put, Walsall need him to sign a contract. He has times during games where he doesn’t make an impact and then he’ll suddenly burst to life. His assist for Lavery was excellent and he had a big hand in the second goal. 8

JOSH GORDON

Gordon is easily one of Walsall’s top performers in recent weeks. He’s loved by the fans, manager and his team-mates alike. His work-rate and goals are invaluable to this Saddlers side. 9

CAOLAN LAVERY

A superb performance from the experienced striker. Lavery isn’t the biggest player but he’s clever in how he wins and holds up the ball. His movement in the box is his best asset, a constant danger. 9

SUBS: Sadler (for Cockerill-Mollett 17) 8, Jules (for McDonald 83) 6.

Not used: Rose, K.Roberts, Hardy, Perry, Willis.
