Celebrity Walsall fan Pete Waterman says investing in the Saddlers is not something he’d be interested in as he’d prefer to remain just a fan.

The Coventry-born music mogul first attended a Walsall match back in the 1960s when they played against Coventry – and he’s supported them ever since after enjoying the oversized sandwiches at Fellows Park.

“I first got into Wasall when I went to see them play against Coventry in ‘64,” said the 71-year-old former Pop Idol judge.

“My dad bought me a ham roll for half a crown – and it was the biggest ham batch I’d ever seen, with the most meat I’d ever seen at that stage.

“I thought ‘any club that could serve a batch that size deserved my support’.”

When asked about his previously rumoured interest in injecting money into the team, Waterman said it’s not a move he’s considered – though he confirmed his fellow music industry pal Steve Jenkins, who has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Simple Minds and The Backstreet Boys, has thought about it in the past.

“Steve has definitely been interested in buying the club, but he never really spoke to me about it,” added Waterman. “It’s not something I would ever want to do; I’m just a fan.

“I don’t want to make it my business.

“One of my friends owned Doncaster for a while. It started out as fun, but I wouldn’t want to deal with the crowds.”

Waterman is responsible for more than 500 million record sales worldwide, and has worked with some of pop’s top acts including Kylie, Steps, Rick Astley and more.

The Stock Aitken Waterman star will speak to fans about his life at a show at Birmingham Town Hall on June 13.
