George Dobson: Walsall heartened as they head to Posh

George Dobson says Walsall must believe in their own ability more as they prepare for two tricky away games.

The Saddlers travel to take on managerless Peterborough tomorrow before then heading to a resurgent Southend this weekend.

Jon Whitney’s side tasted defeat for the first time in five outings on Saturday when they slipped to a 2-1 reverse against league leaders Blackburn.

After a disappointing first half, Walsall dominated Tony Mowbray’s side after the interval and were unlucky not to come away with a point.

And Dobson feels the team can learn a lot from their performance against the title favourites.

“We have got real quality – we just need to believe,” he said.

“We didn’t play our own game in the first half against Blackburn. That was our problem.

“But second half we out performed the team top of the table.

“We showed the form that has seen us win our last three games at home.

“We proved, in that second half, we are a match for anyone when we play with the intensity and at the tempo we are capable of.

“When we attack teams and are on the front foot that is when we are at our best. We’ve got to go out and play our own game.

“But when we drop deep and let teams come on to us, that is when we struggle and concede goals.”

Walsall have won just three games away from the Banks’s Stadium this season. But Dobson says they can win at both Peterborough and Southend if they continue where they left off against Rovers.

“We are going to take the positives from that second half performance against Blackburn into the first whistle tomorrow,” he continued.

“Peterborough are a good team with good attacking players but we have got good attacking players as well. We just need to be confident.

“Before the Blackburn game, we had gone four matches unbeaten and taken eight points from 12.

“Now we have two tough away games but they are two games we are looking forward to. We are going to both Peterborough and Southend to win.”
