Craig Westcarr wants to play a major part in Walsall's new era after re-joining the Saddlers until the end of the season.

The forward had been training with the Saddlers and penned a deal yesterday after several rounds of talks with manager Dean Smith.

The 28-year-old made eight appearances on loan at the Banks's Stadium before returning to Chesterfield this month and left the Spireites by mutual consent two weeks ago.

And, after returning, Westcarr is eyeing a role to help the Saddlers' young guns become stars.

He said: "The team that we have can really go places there's a good mix of young, hungry lads and experience and we looked really solid as a unit during my loan spell. To be part of that again is great for me.

"Recent results have proved what we're capable of and now I want to play my part in helping us to really push on.

"My aim is to play regularly, stay fit and help the team get to where we want to be. Every game at this level is a challenge, but I am really looking forward to it.

"I'm pleased to have signed and now I just want to settle down and concentrate on my football.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Since the very first day I arrived here, this club has always been a perfect fit for me and I believe that I can really progress here."

Westcarr's deal capped a fine day for the Saddlers yesterday, after they confirmed the return of David Kelly as assistant manager.

They also tied down youth team captain Matt Preston to an 18-month deal and, with the transfer window closing tomorrow, boss Smith expects to keep his current stars.

Will Grigg, Jamie Paterson and Andy Butler have all reportedly attracted interest but Smith dismissed the speculation.

He said: "I have had no bid for any of my players. People make offers for players but what you can't do is comment on rumours and that's all they are.

"Until you get something e-mailed to you or in black and white you can't deal with it. They will be rumours I'm having a comeback soon – someone will want to buy me to come and play."
