A lively opening saw both sides have attempts before Sam Joel squared the ball to Conor Tinnion whose first time shot was just over the bar for the hosts before Sam Smith saw his effort save by the Boro goalkeeper.

Rangers tried to respond and the game opened up for full-back Lewis Banks but he saw his effort lack any power and was easily saved.

The Reds went close again after 34 minutes with Walker running into the area before going to ground and Jordan Holt saw his deflected shot wide.

The opener came on 51st minute when Gari Rowntree’s through ball found Jason Walker who slotted the ball under the goalkeeper.

Workington almost doubled their lead shortly afterwards with Jordan Holt’s header at the far post saved by Adam Whitehouse.

Rangers looked for a way back into the tie and Kyle Perry saw his effort blocked before Rowntree was forced to head a dangerous cross over his own bar.

Whitehouse was forced into action again as the game wore on denying Brad Hubbold.
