Emiliano Martinez

Though there was only one serious save, in the first half from Tyler Roberts, his handling was faultless. Villa will hope the groin issue isn’t serious.

Unbeaten 7

Ahmed Elmohamady

Made his second straight start in place of the injured Matty Cash. Beaten by Raphinha with one first-half run but otherwise composed. Showed his experience. Booked for time-wasting.

Dependable 7

Ezri Konsa

Not a bad performance to submit in front of the watching Gareth Southgate. Composed on the ball and always in the right place when needed. Reads the game so well.

Impressive 7

Tyrone Mings

A captain’s performance from the stand-in captain. Yelled his team through the game and backed it up with a fine defensive display. Always in the right place.

Towering 8

Matt Targett

Leeds became the latest team to discover Villa’s left-back is much improved in his second full Premier League season. Has developed a controlled aggression to his game.

Determined 8

John McGinn

A much steadier performance from the Scot than in recent weeks. Carried the ball well when needed and has never been afraid to put his foot in. Passing could have been better at times.

Better 7

Marvelous Nakamba

The Zimbabwe international has started four Premier League matches this season and Villa haven’t conceded in any of them. May have earned an extended run in the team. Provided excellent cover for the defence.

Grafter 7

Jacob Ramsey

Handed just his second Premier League start, the teenager did not let his head coach down with a performance of considerable maturity. Busy but intelligent in his work. Helped carry out the gameplan.

Promising 7

Bertrand Traore

Linked up well with El Ghazi and Watkins in the first-half and though he was much quieter in the second, his work-rate and tracking back contributed to the team performance.

Selfless 6

Ollie Watkins

Had more than a little fortune when “setting up” El Ghazi for the only goal of the game, with what was clearly intended as a shot. Looked on it from the start and lead the line superbly.

Tireless 7

Anwar El Ghazi

Now has six goals in 15 Premier League appearances this season, only eight of those starts. A welcome return to form after a couple of forgettable showings since the turn of the year.

Scorer 7

Substitutes

Morgan Sanson (for Ramsey, 79), Trezeguet (for El Ghazi, 88) Subs not used: Kesler, Taylor, Engels, Barkley, Luiz, Davis, Heaton (gk).
