The 23-year-old has emerged as a prime target for Dean Smith and a deal could be struck if the Magpies complete the signing of Benfica’s Andreas Samaris.

Villa have also made an approach for Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah, though their chances of landing the England international appeared relatively slim on Wednesday.

Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings is expected to be the first player through the door, with Villa last in on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old, who was also the subject of interest from Albion and Nottingham Forest, can play at either centre-back or left-back.

Smith hopes Mings, who stands 6ft 4ins tall, can add a physical presence to a Villa defence which has conceded 46 goals in just 29 games this season.

Striker Scott Hogan is expected to formally complete a loan move to Sheffield United on Thursday morning.

It is possible Villa could look to bring in an extra attacker before tonight’s deadline, with Southampton’s Charlie Austin among those linked. Midfielder Birkir Bjarnason could also depart.
