The 33-year-old was the unlikely hero as he put the seal on a 4-2 win for Dean Smith’s men when he raced more than 50 yards from his own half before slotting past Blues keeper Lee Camp.

It was just the eighth goal of the Scot’s 16-year professional career and only his third since joining Villa in 2011.

He said: “In terms of career moments, it’s up there. Have I scored a better goal? No, I haven’t. Only in training, but they don’t count.

“It was one of those ones growing up when I always wanted to score in a Rangers-Celtic game.

“This is very similar to those games. To be able to score, at the Holte End as well, was just an unbelievable feeling.”

Villa were leading 3-2 and appeared set for a nervy finish when Hutton picked up the ball 10 yards inside his own half.

He explained: “I didn’t realise how deep I picked it up. I think it was Gards (Craig Gardner) I got past.

“When I got near the backline they stepped off and it made my mind up. Before then I was thinking of passing it. When it opened up, I thought I might as well have a shot!

“It was amazing. I have been here a long time and had my ups and downs.

“At the moment I am just really happy with my football and the way things are going. To score in a massive derby, it means so much.

“I’m just like Jack (Grealish), I feel I have been here that long I am part of it. To score in a derby is an amazing feeling.”

Hutton is Villa’s longest-serving current player and affectionately known as the ‘Scottish Cafu’ by supporters.

A video created by fans after yesterday’s game, meanwhile, compared his goal to Diego Maradona’s famous solo strike for Argentina against England in the 1986 World Cup.

Hutton said: “I feel a connection here. I don’t really know how to explain it. You get goosebumps when you are out there and they are singing your name. Having gone through some bad times and come back, it is an amazing feeling.”

Villa boss Dean Smith said: “I’ve only got positive things to say about Alan. Application, attitude, professionalism, he’s got quality as well.”
