The 30-year-old was an unused substitute at Wembley as Steve Bruce opted for Mile Jedinak in midfield instead.

Although the Icelander was disappointed with the decision, he is happy at Villa Park.

“This was hugely frustrating; it was especially frustrating not to play and try to do something about it,” he said.

“I’m not happy at all, but it went as it went. I have two years left of my contract at Villa and am very happy there. I’m happy with the club.”

Villa are set to lose a number of players this summer as they get to grips with the financial pinch of Financial Fair Play following a further reduction in their Premier League parachute payments.

John Terry has already left the club and Jedinak’s future is uncertain, as are a number of players.

But Bjarnason, who nearly left the club in January following a lack of gametime, looks set to stay after impressing during the second half of the season.

Terry has been linked with a possible reunion with former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard at Derby County.

Villa’s skipper left the club earlier this week.
