As the season comes to an end, our Expressandstar.com writers pick out their star performers from this campaign.

Published

Our team of reporters have picked out the best Wolves, West Brom, Aston Villa and Walsall players - but which ones have made the squad?

Find out here...

Goalkeeper: Liam Roberts (Walsall)

Liam Roberts has had an outstanding season between the sticks at Walsall.

The Walsall-born keeper started the season as number two but quickly won a place in the side and then played a key role in keeping the Saddlers in League One.

A fantastic shot-stopper who also commands his box, the 23-year-old looks to have a bright future in the game.

Peaked against Oxford in January.

Defender: Willy Boly (Wolves)

Dominant in the air and at the back, Willy Boly has been key for Wolves this season (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

Took to the Championship like the proverbial duck to water.

Strong, dominant, great in the air and an excellent reader of play, Boly quickly became a cult hero among the Molineux faithful.

Also possesses the on-the-ball technique of a creative midfielder.

His only weakness was, at times, it was too easy for him.

Defender: James Chester (Aston Villa)

One of the Championship's most consistent performers, James Chester has been superb for Villa.

The central defender was deservedly crowned supporters’ player of the season at Villa after a superb campaign in which his performances were consistently excellent.

Chester is Villa’s Mr Dependable, having become the first outfield player since Jlloyd Samuel (2003/04) to play every single minute of the league campaign.

Defender: Conor Coady (Wolves)

Dropping into Wolves' back three, Coady has been a phenomenal performer for Nuno (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

Former midfielder/right-back was a revelation in his new centre-half role and even caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate.

Defensively superb, he also generated endless attacks with his piercing balls to the flanks.

Coady’s captaincy was just as important – he is a natural leader and a fantastic communicator.

Defender: Barry Douglas (Wolves)

Scoring goals and providing wonderful assists, Barry Douglas has been an integral member of the Wolves squad (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

A revelation after signing from Konyaspor for a bargain £1million last summer.

He provided no fewer than 14 assists from left wing-back, the majority with his whipped, piercing deliveries from corners and free-kicks.

Also chipped in with five goals and proved he can be an asset in the Premier League next season.

Defender: Matt Doherty (Wolves)

Matt Doherty was hailed by fans for his performances over the season (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

Metronomic consistency from the Irishman down that right flank. He barely put a foot wrong defensively and going forward he improved his end product no end.

Finally earned international recognition with Ireland too.

For all Wolves’ creative stars, his displays saw him finish third in the player of the season awards.

Midfield: Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)

Controlling numerous games for Villa this season, Grealish has come of age this season.

This always felt like a pivotal season for Grealish and – despite missing the opening months with serious injury – he has duly delivered.

The final piece in Villa’s attacking jigsaw, he is the man who makes them tick.

His sensational strike against Cardiff was among the goals of the season.

Midfield: Ruben Neves (Wolves)

Ridiculously talented and wonderfully majestic, Ruben Neves has lit up the Championship this season. (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

Quite simply one of the finest players to pull on the gold shirt in recent decades.

Neves was without doubt the best midfielder in the league and ran games with poise and elegance.

His passing range was on another level to his team-mates at times.

And his strike against Derby was one of the best ever seen at Molineux.

Winger: Robert Snodgrass (Aston Villa)

Robert Snodgrass has been a revelation at Aston Villa since joining on-loan (Tony Marsh)

The Scot is not the only loan player to have starred for Villa this season.

Yet it is difficult to remember any other ever having quite the same impact.

In addition to goals (seven) and assists (14), Snodgrass has helped to galvanise the team with his desire and never-say-die attitude.

Top business from Steve Bruce.

Winger: Diogo Jota (Wolves)

A brilliant acquisition, Diogo Jota has scored goals all season for Wolves (AMA/Sam Bagnall)

A fantastic season for the flying forward, who scored 18 times and was often Wolves’ inspiration in games where they lacked imagination.

His movement and link-up play were exceptional but perhaps most impressively he shrugged off the often brutish treatment handed out to him by opposition defenders got on with the job.

Striker: Jay Rodriguez (West Brom)

Despite enduring a tough season, Jay Rodriguez has scored goals for Albion (AMA)

Top scored for Albion with 11 goals, which was more than a quarter of the club’s total haul, despite being ferried all over the pitch in a number of positions.

Was dropped from the team during his hottest streak and didn’t let January’s allegations of racial abuse affect his form at all.

Albion will struggle to keep hold of him.

Subs:

Ben Foster (West Brom)

Kept 11 clean sheets in a dreadful team with a series of sparkling one-man performances.

Bookended a blip in form in the middle of the season with some eye-catching saves and finished the campaign in brilliant nick.

Will be a huge asset in the Championship next season after pledging to stay at The Hawthorns.

Alan Hutton (Aston Villa)

After an indifferent start to the season, Hutton got the nod to replace the suspended Neil Taylor when Villa visited Wolves in October and never looked back.

The Scot has been a revelation at left-back, enjoying the most consistent form of his seven-year Villa career and cementing his place as an unlikely cult hero.

Craig Dawson (West Brom)

Craig Dawson helped cement his spot at CB with some strong showings (AMA)

The defender managed to keep his head while all around were losing theirs.

A menace in both boxes, he was a huge miss during a nine-game lay-off and cemented his place at centre-back during the season.

Plenty of clubs will offer him a route back to the Premier League this summer.

Chris Brunt (West Brom)

Played in five different positions.

His delieveries from dead balls and open play were always dangerous.

Only three players from outside the top six set up more goals last season than Brunt.

But he also stepped up as a leader, challenging Alan Pardew, and donning the armband under Darren Moore.

Erhun Oztumer (Walsall)

The creative schemer netted 15 goals last season and bettered that this year with 17.

Without his goals and creatively, the Saddlers would have gone down.

Walsall's wizard, Erhun Oztumer - has been one of the best players in League One this campaign.

Without question, one of the best players in League One.

Had a quiet end to the season, but mathematically secured survival with his goal against Bradford.

Albert Adomah (Aston Villa)

With Villa chronically short on fit or in-form strikers during the early months of the season, winger Adomah stepped up to the plate.

Operating primarily on the left flank, the 30-year-old finished the season as Villa’s top scorer with 14 league goals, 10 of which were netted before the end of November.

Ivan Cavaleiro (Wolves)

The talent was always there in 2016/17 but Cavaleiro just lacked consistency.

All that changed this year – Nuno got the best from the 24-year-old and Cavaleiro was often Wolves’ most explosive force in attack.

He came up with nine goals and 12 assists to more than justify that £7million fee.
